 Dear all,

The current situation due to Covid-19 has dealt a serious blow to the livelihoods of the poor and marginalized communities including the tribal artisans and gatherers, being the most vulnerable people in the country. This is the peak season for harvesting and gathering of forest produces in many regions which will lead to engagement of tribal gatherers into business and endanger their safety. It is therefore, important to address the issues arising out of the long period of lock-down with a set of immediate short term, medium term and long term initiatives, lending extra support to the tribals in this unprecedented times. It is also necessary to take precautionary measures to protect the tribal-gatherers.

As an initial step, Ministry of Tribal Affairs in collaboration with UNICEF & TRIFED has launched the ‘Van Dhan Samajik Doori Jagrookta Abhiyaan’.  The 15,000 Van Dhan SHGs which were sanctioned under Van Dhan Yojana are being equipped with essential safety equipment (masks, soaps, etc.) for carrying out business operations and information material to promote social distancing mandated by the government in this trying times. Several webinars are currently being hosted by TRIFED in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO, with participation from all the Van Dhan partners including State Nodal Departments, Implementing Agencies, other stakeholders and SHG members of the VanDhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs), for creating awareness among the tribal gatherers for following social distancing measures and maintaining necessary hygiene required for carrying out their operations.

The States have also been advised to undertake the necessary measures for mitigating the impact on tribal communities including initiating procurement of MFPs under MSP for MFP scheme for providing much required livelihood support to the tribal gatherers

Let us all come together to the support of Tribals in the country.
